Marta Kanabus: Trainee Patent Attorney


Marta Kanabus obtained a first class honours degree in Biomedical Science from Glasgow Caledonian University. Marta then received a scholarship from UCL to study for a master’s degree in Genetics. Marta then stayed at UCL, where she undertook an industry funded PhD in Biochemistry.

Marta's doctoral research was aimed at developing new treatments for mitochondrial diseases. Marta was also involved in a number of other projects which focused on finding new genes underlying mitochondrial disorders and functional work to understand the disease mechanisms. She is now in the final stage of completing her PhD thesis.

Jason Kanabus: A successful racer


Jason Kanabus (15 June 1976 – 6 July 2006) was a member of the Sainsbury supermarket family, and on his death he left £2.5 million to charity.

Working life and hobby 

Jason Kanabus was brought up on his parents' farm in Sussex, his mother Annabel Kanabus being the youngest daughter of Sir Robert Sainsbury. He attended the local comprehensive school and on leaving school he studied at Brinsbury agricultural college before deciding to work on the family farm. Jason Kanabus's hobby was Lawn mower racing, and he was a successful racer, regularly winning races as well as helping to further develop the sport.

 Cancer and death In June 2004 he was diagnosed with cancer and despite undergoing operations and chemotherapy the cancer progressed. On his 30th birthday on 15 June 2006 he inherited £2.5 million from a trust fund set up for him by his grandfather. Just three weeks later he was told by doctors at the Royal Marsden hospital that he was terminally ill and that he probably only had a few months to live. The next day he collapsed and died. After his death, his mother wrote in his memory the popular web page, "Am I Going to Die?" to help other families with a young person facing a terminal illness, as well as a website about TB, as this is a disease that kills so many young people of Jason's age.  Legacy for farming In his will he left the whole of the £2.5 million he had inherited to the Prince's Trust, with the request that the money be used to help young people become established in farming There has since been some controversy over the use of the Fund by the Prince's Trust, with claims being made that the Trust was not using the legacy as requested.

While still a medical student at Warsaw University, Feliks Kanabus was known for his strong stand against antisemitic hooligans who victimized Jewish students. Even after becoming a successful surgeon, he continued defending his beleaguered Jewish compatriots.

As a surgeon in a pediatric hospital, Kanabus admitted Jewish children who escaped from the ghetto, devising fictitious charts for them which enabled them to stay there until a refuge was found for them. Later, Dr. Kanabus began helping his Jewish medical colleagues leave the ghetto. Among his many activities on behalf of Jews.



Kanabus performed cosmetic operations on Jewish-looking refugees, as well as circumcision-reversal procedures (Elongatio Praeputii), with the help of his wife, Irena, who acted as his assistant. Among the refugees helped by Dr. Kanabus were: Dr. Mieczysław Tursz, Dr. Zdzisław Askanas and his six-year-old son, Aleksander, Dr. Bronisław Wiśniewski, and Jan Fuerstenberg.
In risking their lives to help Jews, the Kanabus were guided by humanitarian motives, which overrode considerations of personal safety or economic hardship.

On September 21, 1965, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Feliks Kanabus as Righteous Among the Nations.
On October 18, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Irena Kanabus as Righteous Among the Nations.

A short summary of origin

I try to summarize the scattering of our clan, according to the history I know. Please add or emend information according your own family archives and knowledge:

- From 10th (990) to 15th century (1453), the well-known Kanabos noble lineage lived in Constantinople, arround Blachernae area (northwestern section of the city) where is still the church St Demetrios Kanabos (also called St Demetrius Kanabus in Latin, Kanabu's in Turkish, even "Canabée" in French...).

- In 1204-1205, after the Sack of Constantinople by the Latin Crusaders and above all the assassination of Nikolaos Kanabos (or in Latin Nicolaus Kanabus), few Kanabos went to Greece and ended up at Nafpaktia and Mistra.
[- Nikolaos was, we know well it, Sebastos (to render the Roman Imperial title of Augustus), then elected Emperor of Byzantine Empire in 1204. (It's the last known act of the Roman Senate founded in 753 BC...). Nikolaos would be a relative of Angelos Imperial dynasty, founded by Konstantinos Angelos from Philadelphia (1096)…]
- In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople and Ottoman occupation, Kanabos family leaved definitively Constantinople to go to Greece.

- But… the last Kanabos living in Constantinople was the Prôtégoros (Lord Mayor) Laskaris Kanabos (1454), a relative of Laskaris and Kantakouzénos Imperial dynasties. His wife was also relative of Constantin XI from Palaiologos dynasty, the last Emperor of Byzance.

- In 1683, after the Battle of Vienna, lost by Ottomans, won by the Polish King John III Sobieski, the Greek private I. Kanabos was prisoner of war in Wilanow (Warsaw). He had descendants, the Kanabus (Latin form of our surname because Polish administration) living actually in Poland. Family estate near Wilanow call “Kanabusowka” - exactly the same name than estate “Kannabeiko” in Ano Hora/Nafpaktia (Greece).

- In 18the century, some Kanabos fleed Ottoman persecutions to Italy where one district of the Reggio Calabria city is called in Calabrian Greek “Kannavo” (phonetically transliterated) or "Cannavo" in Italian. (Warning: I personally don’t know this part of family history and I am curious to get more information).

- In 20th century, some Kanabos (phonetically transliterated Canavos) immigrated to USA from Greece (1930), to Belgium from Poland (1945), to France from Italy (19??)…

- So, Church St Demetrios Kanabos (Constantinople), estate Kannabeiko (Greece), estate Kanabusowka (Poland), district Kannavo (Italy), yes, we will be proud: our clan across the universe.
