Limnitsa was the manor of Kanavaion
Limnitsa is built on the of Makri sides
NA Rachi (1,114 m). In Kambi, the valley near Mornay, where there was an
anncient city, which was suggested by some as the possible location of
Aitolikou Aigitiou. Populating appears that continued to the Byzantine
times, where left the ruins of the temples of St. Constantine and St.
Spyridon and houses. This settlement was abandoned and the natives built
a new village in the position of Paliospita and the neighboring Kato
Vrysi. Here stood the temple of Holy Archangels which according to
tradition was a dependency of the Virgin Varnakova and the church of St.
Athanasius, where today is the cemetery.
Moving from the Paliospita to the
current location seems to have occurred immediately after the
Revolution. Limnitsa is a passageway to the mountainous Nafpaktos and
Doris and bustling with life during the summer months. The square with
the perennial plane tree, the retrofitted fountain, the tourism
infrastructure can satisfy the visitor and the endless green makes the
village worth a visit and observation.
The parish church Pammegistoi Taxiárkhai
is a three aisled basilica (1866). The three masterly carved stones at
the door of the church impress every visitor. Features are the chapels.
At Agia Paraskeui there is an old picture of the Saint bearing the
inscription of the Prayer handmaiden of God Tasioulas Antoniou Kanavou.
Limnitsa was the manor of Kanavaion. The archiproestos Kanavos Antonis
died in 1828, being taken prisoner by the Turks. Seven mills operating
in the village. From Limnitsa descends the grandfather of John Kordatos,
the known historian.
